Using a video projector/external monitor on Linux

[Turkish version follows]

If you have a laptop, chances are that the special keys for sending signals to external devices are not working. Many times different laptop producers stick to different standards and thus Linux has hard time recognizing these keys (I think Ubuntu is best on this one). But don’t fret, you have other choices to try.

For starters, you can try xrandr tool to detect and automatically configure the external device signals. While connected to an external device, like a monitor or a video projector, try

# xrandr -q

which will give you a list of devices that are connected. You can then choose a device to configure, or by simply using

# xrandr --auto

you can have all the devices automatically configured.

In my case, with the -q option, laptop monitor is specified as LVDS and external devices as VGA. If xrandr is not available in your system, check your usual repositories (apt/yum etc), most probably it is included there since this is a pretty basic tool.

If none of the above work, try booting your linux while the device is physically connected. It might be the case that the OS will pick up the device and configure it automatically.

Best of luck.

Kolay gelsin.

Advanced MPI

I’ll be giving an MPI presentation today at 13:30, Computer Engineering Department BMB5, Middle East Technical University. The bulk of my presentation will be about MPI and parallel programming in general but I’ll also be looking at Boost MPI libraries and some helper tools. gfilt, ddd and valgrind will be presented as tools greatly helping parallel programming.

Here’s the presentation I’ll be using, if you are wondering about the topics.

OpenOffice Impress Templates

Turns out there are not many templates that come with OpenOffice.org Impress, which is used for creating presentations. Check out presentation helper, which has really good free presentation designs.

To go along with that, OpenOffice.org Wiki page has the instructions for enabling them on Impress.

Click on File->Templates->Organize and then add them using Command->Import Template.

Türkiye'de Bilişim Sektörü

The Economist‘in 2008 IT Industry Competitiveness Index raporu, özet bölümü (executive summary) her şeyi açıklıyor. Özellikle şu cümleler Türkiye’deki bilişim sektörü için altyapının ne durumda olduğunu gösteriyor, bizim durumumuzu özetliyor:

Competitive broadband markets help cultivate strong IT sectors. Without fast, reliable and secure Internet access, technology firms cannot interact effectively with partners and the research community, nor can they sell their services online. IT industries in the index top tier all derive substantial benefit from the high-quality networks developed through competition, but more telecoms liberalisation is needed in less developed regions to spur infrastructure development.

Aynı konuyu geçenlerde Milliyet’ten Metin Münir de işlemişti.

Türk Telekom özel bir tekel, internet üzerinde ise halen saçma sapan yasalar yüzünden kara bulutlar dolaşıyor. Herhangi bir gün hangi web sitesinin kapanacağını kimse bilmiyor. Diğer taraftan ülkenin en üst düzey yöneticisi ise arkaik yasaları değiştirmek, yeni çağa ayak uydurmak gerekirken ve bunun sorumluluğu üzerindeyken “ben youtube’a giriyorum, siz de girin” diyebiliyor, suçu teşvik ediyor.

Her şeyi toplayın, neden 3. sınıf bir ülke olduğumuz ortaya çıkıyor.

\jump on the bandwagon\" - origin of the term"

From Wikipedia:

Literally, a bandwagon is a wagon which carries the band in a parade, circus or other entertainment. The phrase “jump on the bandwagon” first appeared in American politics in 1848 when Dan Rice, a famous and popular circus clown of the time, used his bandwagon and its music to gain attention for Zachary Taylor’s campaign appearances. As Taylor’s campaign became more successful, more politicians strove for a seat on the bandwagon, hoping to be associated with the success.[…]
